Linked servers

In some cases, the operation of two servers may be linked, with one server unable to fully function without the other server also being turned on. In such cases, the servers can be linked - when the master server is started, the dependent server will also be started (with an optional startup delay, if necessary).

When servers are linked like this, the dependency is uni-directional and cannot be chained, so the master server will not start in response to the dependent server starting and a master server cannot be made dependent on another server. However, multiple dependent servers can be linked to a single master server. (i.e. all dependent servers will be started in response to the master server being turned on)

  1. Log in to your CMM account.

  2. Configure the master server as normal.

  3. On the servers screen, click the Edit pencil button for the server that will be dependent on the master server - this will take you to the Identity tab of the Edit Server screen.

  4. Click the Link Schedule button.

  1. On the Select Below to Link… window, enable the checkbox next to the master server (i.e. the server it will become dependent on).

  2. If it is necessary to have a delay in the dependent server being started (for example, if the master server needs to be fully initialized before the dependent server starts), select the relevant delay period from the Startup Delay drop down menu. If no delay is required, make sure that ‘No delay’ is selected.

  3. Click Save.

Note – Once a server has been made dependent on a master server, schedules can no longer be added to it. It is now entirely dependent on the master server that it has been linked to and will mimic the master server’s schedules.
